What Is Fire Dancing? Fire dancing is any dance involving fire, often through lit props carried by performers. It’s sometimes called other terms, like fire spinning, fire performance, fire twirling or fire manipulation. Routines are usually performed at night to provide a dark visual contrast with the flame.
How does fire spinning work?
The fire-dancer manipulates an object — like poi, or a staff — using their body while the objects are on fire. A wick of a thick canvas material, like Kevlar, is attached to the object to be set on fire. The wick is expected to burn for at least five-minutes and can be lit multiple times for multiple dances.

Example recipe:
- 2 to 4ft x 2″ KEVLAR ® wick (or 2.5″ or 4″) 1/8″ thick wick per fire head.
