Hair follicles stem cells are reserved in niche called bulge (1). Bulge is located between the opening of sebaceous gland and the attachment site of the arrector pili muscle (4). Bulge stem cells are multipotent and have high proliferative potential (5).

The bulge cells are morphologically undifferentiated and slow-cycling under the normal conditions. Later, studies successively demonstrated that bulge cells possess stem cell properties such as high proliferative capacity and multipotency to regenerate not only hair follicles but also sebaceous glands and epidermis.

The dermal papilla consists of mesenchymal cells in the hair follicle, which plays the main role in the regulation of hair growth.
