When do you give Desferal?
It is most effective when given as soon as possible after the iron was eaten. This medication can also be used to help get rid of iron in patients with high iron levels due to many blood transfusions. Deferoxamine is an iron-binding agent that belongs to a class of drugs known as heavy metal antagonists.

DESCRIPTION. Desferal, deferoxamine mesylate USP, is an iron-chelating agent, available in vials for. intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous administration. Desferal is supplied as vials. containing 500 mg and 2 g of deferoxamine mesylate USP in sterile, lyophilized form.
How do you give desferrioxamine?
Desferrioxamine mesilate may be administered intramuscularly, intravenously, or subcutaneously. When administered subcutaneously the needle should not be inserted too close to the dermis.
How do you use deferoxamine?
Deferoxamine combines with iron in the blood. The combination of iron and deferoxamine is then removed from the body by the kidneys. If you have too much iron in the body, it can damage various organs and tissues. This medicine is to be administered only by or under the immediate supervision of your doctor.
How do you use a Desferal pump?
Desferal® is given via a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection using a special pump called an infusor. The infusor is used to give the medicine slowly (usually 8-12 hours). You will have the treatment 3-7 times a week, depending on your level of iron overload.
Is Desferal used to treat iron toxicity?
Deferoxamine (Desferal) is used for chelation of iron in both acute and chronic toxicity.
How is Desferal given?
The standard recommended method of Desferal administration is via slow subcutaneous infusion over 8–12 hours. In patients with intravenous access, the daily dose of Desferal can be administered intravenously.
What are the side effects of Desferal?
Common side effects of Desferal include:
- injection site reactions (pain, swelling, burning, redness, irritation, or a hard lump),
- blurred vision,
- dizziness,
- ringing in your ears,
- flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling),
- itching or skin rash,
- numbness or burning pain anywhere in the body,
- diarrhea,
What is Desferal pump?
Desferrioxamine is the generic name for Desferal®. This medicine is used to help remove excess iron from the body. It does this by binding to iron in the blood, which is then passed out in the urine.
How much iron does Desferal remove?
Theoretically 100 mg Desferal can chelate 8.5 mg of ferric iron.
